Don’t expect coming rainfall to relieve drought conditions

NWS Peachtree City is predicting a new round of stormy weather as April closes, bringing some much needed showers for a month famous for its rainfall. Unfortunately, it won’t be nearly enough to end drought conditions across the state.

Severe weather threats for winds and potential hail are predicted to impact Northwest Georgia on Tuesday, with the likelihood of rain moving in starting during the midday hours and sticking around through midweek. The rain won’t be leaving the region a chance to let the water soak in long. Another round of wet weather has a chance to impact the area starting Thursday night and into Friday.

Regardless of sunshine or storms, temperatures will remain in the mid to upper 70s through the area heading into the middle of the week but will cool slightly on Thursday and for the remainder of the week. NWS Peachtree City is expecting the thermometer in the low 70s for the first few days of May, and lows down into the 40s overnight.

The opening of the week will remain somewhat warmer, and fuel potential severe weather before the midweek cooldown from the cold front pushing through should provide only small relief for drought conditions that have persisted since last fall.

Most of Northwest Georgia and the Metro Atlanta area – along with areas of the Georgia Mountains and down into the middle-west regions of the state – are under a Level 1 threat of Severe Weather, with the main threats being hail and wind. Some portions of far Northwest Georgia around Dade, Walker and Catoosa counties do have the threat of Level 2 Severe Weather for Tuesday.

Expect that forecast to change and threats increase (or decrease) depending on how conditions work out.

Check back on Tuesday as the weather threat develops for any watches or warnings put in place by NWS Peachtree City.
