WEATHER: Severe weather on the way as cold front expected to bring temps down

|

|

Expect showers and thunderstorms during the evening and overnight hours across Northwest Georgia as the first area of the state under the gun with a Level 1 risk of damaging winds, hail and even a chance for tornadoes overnight per NWS Peachtree City.

Severe weather is expected as highs get into record territory again through the afternoon – up into the 80s around in some spots around the region – and then that warm air is going to run into a cold front pushing through the southeast.

The mix of warm air hitting the cold front pushing in from the Plains and Midwest should begin showing up after the sun goes down, and push through during the overnight hours as chances of rain stick around the morning hours.

NWS Peachtree City is expecting a marginal risk as of the mid-afternoon hours, but expect those risks to increase heading into the nighttime hours, with the general timing starting around 8 p.m. for storms to move in, with much of the area under the gun from the first line of severe weather threatening around 9 p.m. in much of Northwest Georgia.

The cold front pushing in behind a line of storms is moving on a line from Northeast to Southwest currently from (at the moment) between Nashville and Houston.

The front following after will bring the thermometer down overnight, with temps dipping down into the upper 30s and low 40s around the region, and only get up into the 50s in the region on Thursday with rain sticking around through the morning hours.

March’s typical windy conditions also return on Thursday, with a breeze expected to increase up to 10 to 15 mph in the area, and up to 30 mph gusts in some places and potentially higher in upper elevations.

Look for freezing temps through much of Northwest Georgia on Thursday night after the severe weather pushes through and leaves clear skies, but the thermometer will start slowly rebounding ahead of the weekend with highs in the 60s on Friday, and down in the 30s and 40s on Friday night.

Saturday’s sunshine will warm the region up into the 70s – with lows into the 40s and 50s – and stick there on Sunday with chances of rain returning and increasing through into the overnight hours. Storms on Sunday night and into Monday morning will see another cold front push through and bring winter back in full for at least a few days.

Expect the Monday forecast in the 50s and chances of rain, but overnight lows down into the 20s with clear skies and slight chances of showers. Sunshine will be back for St. Patrick’s Day with a high up into the 40s and 50s.

Some good news? It might just be a last gasp of winter weather for the season as temps will rebound by the end of next week back into the 70s and 80s (at least in further outlooks available.)

WEATHER: Red Flag Warning in effect for much of NWGA, real fire dangers in place for coming days ahead

It seems like the forecast is on repeat these days: warm weather, low humidity, and drought conditions are combining to make burning anything outdoors a serious danger for everyone in Northwest Georgia.

A good swath of the northern half of the state in a line from Polk County up into the Georgia Mountains in Rabun County are all under the threat of a Red Flag Warning for the day, and additional fire danger statements and warnings are in effect around the metro Atlanta area and the southernmost half of the region through 8 p.m. today.

Expect conditions to continue to be dry, warm and humidity to remain low as there aren’t any April showers in store for the coming days as well. NWS Peachtree City is expecting highs into the upper 80s and low 90s for the remainder of the week across the region and state as the high pressure system sitting over the southeast persists at least through the weekend.

A small chance of relief is on the way as the forecast calls for chances of rain this coming weekend – only 20% on Saturday night and into Sunday – but expect sunshine and a small mix of clouds to persist.

The warm weather and lack of rain is leading the state to have drought conditions persist as the southeast as a whole remains dry for an otherwise pleasant spring that sees no sign of a change in the weather pattern over the coming days.

The unexpected heat wave also comes with another consequence: air conditioning systems are being switched on earlier this year. Now is a good time to remind folks who missed their chance during the switchover for DST to change air filters and clean out returns on their HVAC systems – whether they are window units or built into your home.

Make sure to also check outdoor units for any potential damage that might have been caused while they were off during the winter months (especially for window units) as that can impact operations at a time when air conditioning will be desirable for folks to cool down over the coming days.

Looking further ahead, chances of showers heading into the month of May are increasing in extended forecasts. Stay tuned for additional updates.
