WEATHER: From Pleasant to Polar over the weekend, then thermometer marches upward again toward holiday week

|

|

A couple days of unexpected mild temps that’ll be downright pleasant for December are coming up to cap off the week and start the weekend, but it’ll turn into something akin to polar temps outside for highs and lows based on the latest predictions from the National Weather Service.

Friday’s forecast calls for sunshine and temps up into the low 60s in some spots around Northwest Georgia, and more of the same on Saturday as lows dip down into the 30s overnight.

But by Saturday night, there’s chances of rain and lows will drop into the 30s, and then it’ll turn full-on frigid by Sunday as skies clear again and the thermometer barely clears the 30s for the day, and drops overnight well below freezing.

The overnight low heading into Monday is currently at down into the teens, but could be colder in higher elevations as a another round of Arctic air will bring near record cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills from the Northern High Plains into the Mid-South and Mid-Atlantic through the weekend.

Expect the thermometer to start heading back in the right direction on Monday with highs in the low to mid 40s around the area, but still dip well below freezing into the teens and 20s overnight heading into Tuesday.

Sunshine will prevail through the early week and into midweek, but chances of showers return and bring with it some more seasonable temperatures with it as highs will by this time next week be back into the 60s in Northwest Georgia, and should remain in the low to mid 60s through the weekend with the likelihood of showers.

Looking ahead toward the holiday week before Christmas, there’s no major chance right now of Santa delivering any snow and temps should remain in the low to mid 60s, and down into the upper 40s overnight.

Elsewhere across the nation, the forecast isn’t as pleasant as an atmospheric river is impacting the upper northwest in Oregon and Washington state, causing severe flooding and landslides that the NWS classifies as bringing “significant risk to life and property” in an area stretching from south-central Washington through the northern coasts.

Major snowstorms are impacting eastern Montana through the majority of North Dakota and Minnesota, stretching over to Wisconsin, and a band of snow showers is falling across much of Iowa, Illinois and along the Ohio River valley in Kentucky, southern Ohio, southern Virginia and most of West Virginia.

Lake effect snowstorms are also impacting New York and Pennsylvania, and portions of the Northeast are getting snow up in Vermont as well.

For those who are dreaming of warm, sandy beaches while it is getting cold – it is exactly the kind of weather you’re hoping for in spots like Hawaii right now. Friday brings mostly sunny skies and highs up into the 70s in Honolulu, sunny and 77 in Miami, and 74 degrees in Corpus Christi, Texas. A more tropical destination where some can imagine dipping their toes in the sand includes St. Croix in the Virgin Islands, where the highs this weekend are up into the mid-80s and down into the 70s overnight.

NO SNOW FOR NWGA: Winter weather impacts unlikely for the area heading into holiday weekend

Central & East Georgia expecting flurries on Sunday morning

A swath of snow impact is expected in Georgia, but not for the folks up in this neck of the woods.

The National Weather Service office in Peachtree City is defining a line south of I-85 and across I-16 as far southwest as Americus and Columbus and a far north as Toccoa that are expecting snowfall and potentially upward of an inch of accumulation on Sunday, but not much else is going to come of the winter weather event for Northwest Georgia.

Any rainfall that could impact the area is more likely to threaten to become black ice, if any falls at all with the current forecast expecting to remain dry through the weekend and into the MLK Holiday.

Temperatures are expected to be cold in the coming days, with highs in the 40s and 50s around the region and down into the 20s overnight through Sunday, which will get into the upper 30s and low 40s through the region and down into the upper teens and lower 20s overnight.

Expect the MLK holiday forecast to come with sunshine and a high up into the 40s for the day, and down into the teens overnight. The thermometer is going to remain on a swing from the 40s down into the teens through the start of next week heading into chances for rain by Wednesday night and the latter half of the coming week.

Long and short: NWS Peachtree City doesn’t expect any real winter weather for Northwest Georgia, but bitter cold nights are ahead for the region. So stay bundled and indoors whenever possible.

And any winter weather impacts of snow on Central and East Georgia are more likely to wash away with snow predicted to turn to rain on Sunday, but is more likely to freeze overnight unless high winds can dry out roadways beforehand.

Winter weather impacts remain to be felt across a wide swath of the upper Midwest, Great Lakes region and the Northeast as a cold air mass impacts the eastern half of the United States over the coming days. Freezing temperatures are also impacting the Pacific Northwest in much of Washington state and Oregon.

Check back for any updates needed on potential for winter weather over the weekend as they become available.
