WEATHER: Flood Watch remains in effect for Northwest Georgia following wet end to weekend

The rain is needed, but now there’s a bit too much water flowing through the region as all of Northwest Georgia remains under a flood watch, and more showers are possible over the coming days per the National Weather Service forecast.

NWS Peachtree City is keeping Bartow, Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Floyd, Gordon, Haralson, Paulding, Polk, Walker and Whitfiled counties under a flood watch through 9 p.m.

Additional rain through the remainder of the afternoon with chances for thunderstorms in the offing could bring at least another tenth of an inch, and upward of a quarter inch with higher amounts expected in heavy thunderstorms could help keep local waterways near their banks and potentially running over should the rainfall county to be on the heavy side.

Those who find roadways covered by flowing water MUST NOT DRIVE THROUGH TO THE OTHER SIDE. If you can’t see the bottom of the road, there’s a possibility the road could have been washed out, and your vehicle and you inside will go with it.

Additionally, those who live in low-lying areas should keep an eye on rising waters for the potential for localized flooding requiring an evacuation of a residence.

Stormy weather in some form remains in the forecast over the coming days, with a mix of clouds and sunshine returning for summertime monsoon season in Northwest Georgia.

Temperatures will be on the rise, as Tuesday’s high will reach the mid-80s, and then the remainder of the week will see the thermometer start to reach into the upper 80s and low 90s, typical of summer in the region. Chances for showers and thunderstorms will remain between 30 to 50% through the coming days and into the weekend.

Expect by Saturday and Sunday the chance for mostly sunny skies and highs getting into the low 90s, and chances of rain tapering off.

But the forecast looking ahead will be similar, if not a bit cooler. Look for highs in the low to mid 80s starting off next week, with chances of rain higher to open the week and tapering off for afternoon scattered showers and thunderstorms heading into the latter half of the week.

The additional wet weather should have an impact on continuing lessening drought conditions after months of dry weather across the state. Thursday’s Drought Monitor update upcoming should see far western counties in the region moving into the moderately dry category in full, and drought conditions lessen overall.
