WEATHER: Cold giving way to potential for winter weather for the coming weekend

|

|

Snow is in the forecast for the first time this winter, and the chances are increasing toward the weekend.

But first: one more day of sunshine before chances of rain return to the forecast.

NWS Peachtree City is calling for clear skies and temps in the 40s for today, then will dip down into the 20s again overnight before a midweek warmup to the 50s on Wednesday with mostly sunny skies before the potential for rain showers starting on Wednesday night as temps dip down into the 30s.

Chances for showers extend through the tail end of the week, with at least a 50% chance of rain on Thursday and Thursday night, with highs into the mid 40s through low 50s and down into the 30s overnight.

Friday’s high should make it up to around 50 for some parts of Northwest Georgia, but expect the thermometer to linger in the 40s during the day and then start dropping toward freezing overnight.

Those chances of rain are right now predicted to turn into snow showers on Friday night and into Saturday, with a mix of rain, snow and wintry mix possible heading into the weekend.

Snow and rain mix could continue through the weekend into Saturday night and Sunday morning, with highs getting into the upper 30s and low 40s through the region and by Sunday morning turning into freezing rain and then dip well below freezing on Sunday night.

Right now, forecasts are still developing on the potential for winter weather over the weekend, and could be downgraded to rain showers or increase to additional snow.

Much of that will depend on how moisture from the eastern Pacific and the Gulf interact heading into the weekend with arctic air that is pushing southward into the Ohio, Mississippi River valleys, out westward into North Texas, Oklahoma and parts of Kansas all the way eastward into the Carolinas, and the mid-Atlantic states.

Check back for forecast updates through the rest of the week on the developing situation that could bring snow to Northwest Georgia.

WEATHER: Warm temps for Tuesday, shower chances return for midweek

1 (16)

The warm sunshine wasn’t destined to last forever amid the winter season, but it sure is a nice break from formerly freezing temps across the region (and nation) over the past weeks.

The thermometer got up into the 70s in some parts of Northwest Georgia on Monday, and temps could get up to the mid 70s in the farthest southern parts of the area on Tuesday as the last stretch of warm through the rest of the week turns mild and somewhat chilly overnight, with showers ahead on and off through the rest of the week.

NWS Peachtree City expects party sunny skies on Tuesday as a front moves in, with the rain beginning on Tuesday night and into Wednesday as chances currently sit at 60% for showers – mainly after midnight into the early morning midweek hours.

Once the front moves through – with breezes and wind gusts up to 15 mph at times and potentially more speedy at higher elevations – temps will come down near freezing overnight on Wednesday with clear skies heading into a brief return to sunshine on Thursday.

Temps will be in the mid 50s to mid 60s around Northwest Georgia heading into the tail-end of the week, with lows down into the upper 30s and lower 40s with chances of showers moving right back into the region, and remaining through the end of the week and into Valentine’s Day weekend.

Friday’s forecast calls for slight chances of showers and highs into the upper 50s and low 60s again, and then dipping down into the 40s with even some chances for rumbles of thunder up to around 30% overnight.

Unfortunately those planning for romantic picnics on Saturday will have to hold off with chances of showers increasing through the day and highs into the upper 50s and low 60s around the area. Expect weekend dates during the evening and night time hours to require umbrellas as rainfall is essentially a given with a 90% chance of showers and a low in the upper 40s and low 50s for Northwest Georgia.

Sunday morning church services following the holiday weekend will also be rainy, with highs in the low 60s for the day and rain chances expected to stick around as the last of the weekend front moves out by Sunday night.

Sunshine will return for President’s Day, with highs in the mid-60s expected around the area.

Expect above average temps to stick around next week as well, with highs predicted in the 60s and 70d through mid week and into the following weekend.
