Thanksgiving Forecast: Skies clearing, temps dropping for Turkey Day

|

|

Hoping for good weather for traveling to see family and friends for Thanksgiving?

The good news is rain that passed through Northwest Georgia and provided some much needed rain – but also blew away what remained of the autumn leaves from many trees – and the bad news is the warm weather is gone.

Expect a cooldown and temps just below freezing overnight as Thanksgiving week wraps up for many on the clock on Wednesday, with highs in the 50s to low 60s throughout the region, and down into the upper 20s and low 30s overnight.

Rain that pushed out of the area and brought a cold front behind it on Tuesday night will bring clear skies for a few days before rain is set to potentially return for the latter half of the weekend and heading into December.

Expect mostly cloudy skies for the busiest shopping day of the year on Black Friday and highs up into the 40s and down into the low 20s overnight, followed by Small Business Saturday with partly sunny skies as the day also marks rival weekend around the southeast.

Gameday temps will be in the 40s to low 50s around the region on Saturday. They’ll get down into the 30s overnight.

Chances of rain return by Saturday night, with potential for some flurries even in higher elevations with lower temps, but don’t expect that to stick or last.

Sunday brings even chances for showers and mostly cloudy skies, with a high into the 50s during the day, and rain remains with temps down into the 30s heading into early Monday morning.

December and the upcoming return to regular work during the holiday season begins with highs in the 50s, chances for rain and cloudy skies persisting. Expect more of the same through Tuesday and into the days that follow, with cloudy skies remaining through the middle of next week before chances of rain return on Friday and through the first weekend of the month.

Most of the nation should enjoy a clear Thanksgiving holiday, the only spots having to worry about potential for weather issues during one of the busiest holiday travel weeks of the year, with only the Pacific Northwest having to deal with rain and some snow in the upper Rockies, while the upper Midwest and around the Great Lakes having to deal with Lake Effect snow.

It will be colder across the country overall through the Thanksgiving holiday as arctic air dips southward.

WEATHER: Thermometer bouncing as mild winter temps dip below zero overnight

082725 fallweatherforecast

It won’t feel too terribly warm out over the coming days, but NWS Peachtree City is noting that Northwest Georgia will still be somewhat mild for wintertime temperatures during the day, and dip overnight below freezing.

Forecasts call for cloudy skies to start the week to give way to sunshine by Tuesday, but expect overnight drops of the mercury down below freezing for the coming nights as well.

Sunshine is expected through the rest of the week and highs in upper 40s through upper 50s around Northwest Georgia, and down into the 20s and 30s overnight.

The pattern is expected to stick around through the next seven days as the holiday season continues, with no expectation of precipitation mixing in with freezing temps through the coming days as well.

With overnight temperatures dipping below freezing throughout the region, it is a good reminder to ensure four things are being taken care of before the thermometer dips too low and causes problems. Check on people, pets, plants and pipes.

Those who aren’t able to have normal heating sources should be checked on regularly to ensure they are remaining warm overnight or find shelter amid freezing temps. Pets should be brought inside overnight as well, or be provided a heat source to remain warm if they have exterior quarters of their own, like a shed or barn.

Plants should also be brought inside to avoid freeze damage if they aren’t able to survive the cold – especially any tropical plants. Pipes should be left to drip slowly overnight to keep them from freezing up and causing damage as well.

Northwest Georgia’s latest round of mild-to-freezing temperature bounces are being caused by arctic high pressure fronts moving down from Canada across the eastern half of the United States over the coming days. The impact should begin to trend more downward toward below-average temperatures through the weekend and highs are expected to stick in the 30s and 40s around Northwest Georgia, and below freezing overnight.

A large portion of the nation is expected to feel the freeze from arctic air moving southward, but it shouldn’t last too long. The extended forecast into next week calls for sunshine and temps to return to this week’s pattern through Wednesday, when chances of rain extend through Thursday morning and then clear away before a weekend of mixed clouds and sunshine heading into Christmas week.
