NO SNOW FOR NWGA: Winter weather impacts unlikely for the area heading into holiday weekend

|

|

Central & East Georgia expecting flurries on Sunday morning

A swath of snow impact is expected in Georgia, but not for the folks up in this neck of the woods.

The National Weather Service office in Peachtree City is defining a line south of I-85 and across I-16 as far southwest as Americus and Columbus and a far north as Toccoa that are expecting snowfall and potentially upward of an inch of accumulation on Sunday, but not much else is going to come of the winter weather event for Northwest Georgia.

Any rainfall that could impact the area is more likely to threaten to become black ice, if any falls at all with the current forecast expecting to remain dry through the weekend and into the MLK Holiday.

Temperatures are expected to be cold in the coming days, with highs in the 40s and 50s around the region and down into the 20s overnight through Sunday, which will get into the upper 30s and low 40s through the region and down into the upper teens and lower 20s overnight.

Expect the MLK holiday forecast to come with sunshine and a high up into the 40s for the day, and down into the teens overnight. The thermometer is going to remain on a swing from the 40s down into the teens through the start of next week heading into chances for rain by Wednesday night and the latter half of the coming week.

Long and short: NWS Peachtree City doesn’t expect any real winter weather for Northwest Georgia, but bitter cold nights are ahead for the region. So stay bundled and indoors whenever possible.

And any winter weather impacts of snow on Central and East Georgia are more likely to wash away with snow predicted to turn to rain on Sunday, but is more likely to freeze overnight unless high winds can dry out roadways beforehand.

Winter weather impacts remain to be felt across a wide swath of the upper Midwest, Great Lakes region and the Northeast as a cold air mass impacts the eastern half of the United States over the coming days. Freezing temperatures are also impacting the Pacific Northwest in much of Washington state and Oregon.

WEATHER: Warm temps for Tuesday, shower chances return for midweek

The warm sunshine wasn’t destined to last forever amid the winter season, but it sure is a nice break from formerly freezing temps across the region (and nation) over the past weeks.

The thermometer got up into the 70s in some parts of Northwest Georgia on Monday, and temps could get up to the mid 70s in the farthest southern parts of the area on Tuesday as the last stretch of warm through the rest of the week turns mild and somewhat chilly overnight, with showers ahead on and off through the rest of the week.

NWS Peachtree City expects party sunny skies on Tuesday as a front moves in, with the rain beginning on Tuesday night and into Wednesday as chances currently sit at 60% for showers – mainly after midnight into the early morning midweek hours.

Once the front moves through – with breezes and wind gusts up to 15 mph at times and potentially more speedy at higher elevations – temps will come down near freezing overnight on Wednesday with clear skies heading into a brief return to sunshine on Thursday.

Temps will be in the mid 50s to mid 60s around Northwest Georgia heading into the tail-end of the week, with lows down into the upper 30s and lower 40s with chances of showers moving right back into the region, and remaining through the end of the week and into Valentine’s Day weekend.

Friday’s forecast calls for slight chances of showers and highs into the upper 50s and low 60s again, and then dipping down into the 40s with even some chances for rumbles of thunder up to around 30% overnight.

Unfortunately those planning for romantic picnics on Saturday will have to hold off with chances of showers increasing through the day and highs into the upper 50s and low 60s around the area. Expect weekend dates during the evening and night time hours to require umbrellas as rainfall is essentially a given with a 90% chance of showers and a low in the upper 40s and low 50s for Northwest Georgia.

Sunday morning church services following the holiday weekend will also be rainy, with highs in the low 60s for the day and rain chances expected to stick around as the last of the weekend front moves out by Sunday night.

Sunshine will return for President’s Day, with highs in the mid-60s expected around the area.

Expect above average temps to stick around next week as well, with highs predicted in the 60s and 70d through mid week and into the following weekend.
