ANOTHER SHOOTING IN MINNESOTA

MINNEAPOLIS — A 37-year-old man is dead and ICE is in the middle of another shooting incident in Minnesota today as accounts of what happened differ between federal authorities and those on the scene.

Video from the incident that took place in Minneapolis on Saturday saw Alex Pretti, a intensive care unit nurse, killed amid an ICE operation in the city.

Not long after the shooting, protesters were clashing with federal immigration officers. Governor Tim Walz called up the Minnesota National Guard to the shooting site and a federal building where protests have grown over the past weeks.

This marks the latest incident in the Twin Cities involving ICE officers and local residents attempting to fight a crackdown against illegal immigrants who live in Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara told reporters during a press conference that information about the shooting was limited.

Federal officials claim that Pretti was armed and that agents fired defensive shots while trying to subdue him.

Others who watched and recorded the incident claim that Pretti only had a phone in his hand at the time, but was fighting with officers who were attempting to take him into custody.

Per officials and Pretti’s family, he did have a concealed carry permit and owned a handgun, but no information was provided about the weapon Pretti was alleged to have been carrying during the incident.

He was shot and killed just over a mile from where Renee Good was killed on January 7.

Both were the same age.

His family released a statement that they were “heartbroken but also very angry,” and noted that he was seeking to make a difference in the world with his work as a nurse and had joined protests after Good’s death earlier this month.

“The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump’s murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He has his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down all while being pepper sprayed,” the family statement said. “Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man.”

The shooting occurred while protesters were blowing whistles and shouting at federal agents on Nicollet Avenue. Leading up to the shooting, agents were initially shoving a person in a brown jacket in the bystander video. Amid a back-and-forth with an agent, additional ICE officers surrounded the man and began to resist, and was being struck with a canister by an agent before a shot rang out. The officers then backed off and fired at who was later identified as Pretti.

Saturday’s shooting also marked the latest showdown between state and federal law enforcement agencies, with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension blocked from participating in the latest shooting by federal authorities this month in Minneapolis.

Federal agents have also headed up the investigation into the Good shooting as well.
